Product details

API 5L covers seamless and welded steel line pipe. This is steel pipe for pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries. API 5L is suitable for conveying gas, water, and oil in both the oil and natural gas industries.

It includes standard-weight plain-end, regular-weight plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end, special plain-end, extra-strong plain-end pipe and standard-weight and extra-strong threaded line pipe as well bell and spigot and through-the-flow line(TFL) pipe.
Size range is limited only by manufacturer’s capabilities.
Grades covered by this specification are A25 ,A ,B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, X80. The two digit number following the "X" indicates the Minimum Yield Strength (in 000's psi) of pipe produced to this grade.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ASTM A106 /ASTM A53 PIPES/API 5L

ASTM A106: covers seamless carbon steel pipes for high pressure applications (and for temperatures up to 750 degrees F)

ASTM A53: covers black and hot dip galvanized carbon steel pipes for low / medium pressure and mechanical application

A last pipe specification that often overlaps with A53 / A106 is the API 5L Gr. B, which covers line pipes. These three specs are very close in terms of chemical composition, mechanical properties: some manufacturers actually mark the same length / bundle of pipe with the three standards at the same time to indicate their interchangeability. For the same reason, it is also quite common that suppliers quote alternatively API 5L or A106 pipes if they receive an enquiry for A53 pipes.

That said, the main differences among A106 and A53 pipes are in terms of:

  • Manufacturing process: A106 pipes are available only in seamless execution, whereas A53 pipes are either welded or seamless

  • Pressure range: A106 pipes withstand higher pressure and temperature ranges

  • Chemical composition and mechanical properties (see tables below)

As a rule of thumb, A106 pipes are supplied when seamless execution is requested, A53 when welded execution is preferred for cost reasons.

We can produce special diameter and wallthickness seamless pipes. Adopted standards: ASTM A106, ASTM A53, API 5L GR.B, GB/T8163,EN10216 etc

The diameter range from 1000m to 1600m, wallthickness from 20- 400mm. The pipes are extensively applied for nuclear power station and other key project.
